Ghostly Flicker

Ghostly Flicker is a staple blue instant in Magic: The Gathering that was reimagined as part of the Secret Lair series, a curated line of premium, alternate-art cards launched by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. This specific release, appearing as card number 2229, features stylized artwork designed to distinguish it from its original printing in the Avacyn Restored set. The Secret Lair initiative was created to provide collectors with thematic, artist-driven interpretations of iconic gameplay mechanics, often leaning into experimental aesthetics that diverge significantly from the traditional house style of the game.

The design of this version leans into the ethereal nature of the card's function—exiling and returning permanents to the battlefield—by employing high-contrast colors and surrealist imagery. By commissioning artists to reimagine established favorites, the series aimed to bridge the gap between functional game pieces and fine art collectibles. Upon release, these drops were met with considerable interest from the Magic community, serving as both a sought-after aesthetic upgrade for competitive decks and a niche collectible for those who prioritize the artistic evolution of the game’s visual identity.
