Where it came from
Ghoulcaller Gisa first debuted in the 2014 Commander set, quickly becoming a staple for players drawn to black-aligned graveyard manipulation and zombie tribal strategies. The character originates from the gothic horror setting of Innistrad, depicted as a necromantic prodigy who serves as a dark foil to her brother, Geralf. Her design emphasizes the visceral nature of Innistrad's horror, focusing on the mechanical act of sacrificing living forces to generate relentless waves of the undead.
The Foundations Commander printing serves as a contemporary update to this iconic legend, maintaining the classic synergy that made the original card a fan favorite. Illustrators for the character have consistently leaned into a macabre, ornate aesthetic that complements her role as a master of death. Upon release, the design was well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community for its clear, synergistic mechanical identity and its contribution to the narrative depth of Innistrad's grim lore.
