Where it came from
Ghoulcaller Gisa was first introduced in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering set Commander 2014, depicting a notorious necromancer from the gothic-horror world of Innistrad. As the sister of the infamous Geralf Cecani, Gisa serves as a central character in the dark lore of the plane, defined by her ability to raise armies of zombies from the earth. The version from the Jumpstart set, released in 2020, features the original artwork by Clint Cearley, which captures her chaotic and eerie aesthetic.
The character design focuses on her role as a foil to her brother, shifting the traditional necromancer archetype into a more visceral, tactical commander. By emphasizing her power to sacrifice small creatures to generate larger hordes, the design effectively translates her lore-based abilities into a cohesive mechanical identity. The card has been well-regarded by players for its balance of flavor and utility, maintaining its status as a staple choice for players focused on black-aligned graveyard themes.
