Where it came from
Giant Caterpillar was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Mercadia, the expansion introduced themes of commerce and mercantile manipulation, and the art direction for the set emphasized the peculiar, often alien flora and fauna of the world to contrast with previous high-fantasy settings.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic illustrators in the game's early history. Rush utilized a distinct, grounded illustrative style to depict the creature as an unassuming yet potentially threatening entity, aiming to reflect its mechanical function as a delayed-gratification card that matures into a larger creature.
