Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1998 as part of the Unglued set, Giant Fan was designed as a parody card for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was the first intentional foray into 'silver-bordered' cards, which were created specifically for casual play and humor, intentionally breaking standard game rules and mechanics to offer a tongue-in-cheek experience for the community.

The card was illustrated by Randy Gallegos, who utilized a whimsical, cartoonish style to depict the literal interpretation of a fan. The design concept plays on the dual meaning of the word, depicting a giant cooling device in a fantasy setting. Upon its release, it was received as a lighthearted commentary on the nature of fandom and the absurdity of hyper-literal card effects in competitive gaming.
