Lore

Why it matters

This common card offers a unique way to turn the tide of combat by forcing creatures to engage in disadvantageous trades. Because it can be used to manipulate an opponent's blocking decisions, it serves as a calculated tool for players looking to disrupt an adversary's defensive strategy.

Provenance

Where it came from

Giantbaiting was originally released in the 2008 Lorwyn expansion, an edition designed to immerse players in a whimsical yet treacherous fairytale world inspired by Celtic folklore. As a sorcery card featuring the unique 'clash' mechanic, it captured the thematic essence of David-versus-Goliath struggles, emphasizing the set's focus on tribal synergies and high-fantasy storytelling.

The 2017 Modern Masters reprinting featured updated card frames and premium production standards, serving as a high-visibility return for the card in a curated set designed for high-level competitive draft environments. The illustration, created by artist Brandon Dorman, maintains the original vivid, painterly style that established the card's visual identity as a quintessential representation of the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor aesthetic.
