Where it came from
Gideon's Intervention was released in April 2017 as part of the Amonkhet expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced a desert-themed plane inspired by Ancient Egyptian mythology, depicting a society ruled by the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas. This card represents a pivotal narrative moment where the indestructible hero Gideon Jura attempts to protect the citizens of Naktamun from the horrors unfolding during the Hours of the set's storyline.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive, painterly style. Voss designed the piece to emphasize Gideon's protective nature and physical durability, centering the composition on his iconic surcoat and the glowing sigil of his invulnerability. The card was well-received by players for its versatile utility in control-oriented decks, serving as both a defensive measure against specific threats and a means to prevent incoming damage.
