Where it came from
Gift of the Gargantuan was released in October 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the concept of a fractured multiverse, where the world of Alara was split into five distinct shards, each defined by a unique combination of three colors of mana. This card represents the Bant shard, a plane characterized by its noble knights and focus on order, community, and crystalline structures.
The card’s illustration was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific artist known for his significant contributions to the game's visual identity during the late 2000s. Briclot intended to capture the immense scale of the gargantuans—creatures of immense power native to the Bant landscape—as they interact with the civilization they protect. The artwork was well-received for its sense of perspective and its ability to convey the awe-inspiring nature of the creature type within the game's broader lore.
