Provenance

Where it came from

Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms, identified as card number 461 in the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game, draws from the character's long-standing history as a recurring antagonist and fan-favorite in the Final Fantasy franchise. First introduced in Final Fantasy V, Gilgamesh is characterized by his obsession with legendary weaponry and his recurring attempts to defeat the protagonists, often accompanied by his loyal companion Enkidu. This card was released as part of the Opus series, which was developed by Square Enix to translate the aesthetics and mechanics of the video game series into a competitive tabletop experience.

The card features dynamic illustration consistent with the art direction of the Opus sets, which frequently commission established character designers and franchise artists to provide new interpretations of iconic figures. The design aims to capture the essence of his 'Master-at-Arms' persona, highlighting his penchant for dual-wielding or collecting iconic weapons throughout the series' multiverse. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile addition to players' decks, particularly valued for its thematic alignment with equipment-based playstyles and its ability to represent the character's erratic but formidable combat style.
