Provenance

Where it came from

The Gilt-Leaf Winnower was released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set, Magic Origins, a base set designed to narrate the foundational backstories of five iconic planeswalkers. As part of the set's exploration of the plane of Lorwyn, the card represents the darker, more predatory side of the Elven culture there, emphasizing the aesthetic of 'perfection' through the systematic culling of those they deem flawed or unworthy.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Greg Staples, who utilized his signature dark, painterly style to capture the malevolent essence of an Elven assassin. By focusing on the creature's sharp, monochromatic palette and the grim nature of its ability to eliminate non-elf creatures, Staples successfully conveyed the ruthless hierarchy inherent to the Gilt-Leaf elves. The card was well-received by players for its specific utility in creature-based matchups, finding a consistent place in black-green graveyard and control decks of the period.
