Global Ruin

Global Ruin was included in the 2002 World Championship Decks, a product line released by Wizards of the Coast to allow players to purchase exact replicas of the decks used by finalists at the Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These decks featured a distinct gold-bordered card back and a signature of the player on the front, distinguishing them from standard tournament-legal cards. They were designed to provide a high-level competitive experience to the average player while serving as a commemorative snapshot of the year's top-tier professional play.

The card itself was a staple of the 'Blue-White Control' archetype, which heavily influenced the competitive environment of the 2001-2002 tournament season. Originally designed by the R&D team for the Invasion expansion, Global Ruin was intended as a high-impact, late-game sorcery capable of resetting the board state in favor of the player who had prepared the necessary mana base.
