Gluttonous Slug was released in 2019 as part of Modern Horizons, a groundbreaking Magic: The Gathering set designed specifically for non-rotating formats like Modern. Wizards of the Coast developed the set to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without them having to pass through a Standard-legal release, allowing for more complex mechanics and high-power interactions that might otherwise be too disruptive for Standard play.

The creature was illustrated by artist Svetlin Velinov, whose work often leans into the visceral, dark fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Magic multiverse. The design focuses on a grotesque, bottom-feeding creature that rewards the player for sacrificing resources, reflecting the 'Aristocrats' archetype prevalent in black-aligned deck strategies. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche but effective utility card for aggressive black decks, praised for its ability to grow stronger while simultaneously providing minor reach in combat.
