Goblin

The Goblin token, numbered 11 in the Core Set 2019 expansion, was released by Wizards of the Coast in July 2018. It serves as a supplementary game piece for Magic: The Gathering, designed to be placed on the battlefield when specific cards, such as Krenko's Command or Siege-Gang Commander, create creature tokens. The token format was standardized to provide a clear, visual representation of the game state, allowing players to distinguish these temporary units from cards held in a player's hand or library.

The illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose work is frequently characterized by a textured, organic style. In this depiction, Hamm leans into the quintessential aesthetic of a Magic: The Gathering goblin, focusing on a feral expression and rugged features. Upon its release, the token was well-received by the player base for its consistency and readability, fitting seamlessly into the established visual language of the set while maintaining the distinct, slightly grotesque charm expected of the goblin creature type.
