Provenance

Where it came from

Released in October 1998, Goblin Raider was part of the Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the first set in the Urza block, it centered on the artificer Urza and introduced the enchantment-heavy gameplay that defined the era. The card was designed as a common creature to fill the low-end of the red mana curve, serving as an aggressive, functional piece that emphasized the impulsive nature of goblin tribal themes prevalent in the game at the time.

The artwork for Goblin Raider was illustrated by D. Alexander Gregory, who contributed several pieces to the set. The design captures a classic, gritty fantasy aesthetic, focusing on the scrappy and chaotic character of the goblin race. Upon release, the card became a recognizable element of limited-format draft environments, lauded by players for its simplicity and role in establishing the rapid-paced pressure that red decks sought to maintain during the late 1990s.
