Goblin War Drums

Goblin War Drums first appeared in the Stronghold expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, designed as a thematic enchantment to reflect the chaotic, aggressive nature of goblin warfare. The card functions by forcing opponents to block with multiple creatures if they wish to block at all, mechanically representing the overwhelming and disorganized pressure of a goblin horde. It was later reprinted in the Seventh Edition core set in 2001, which served as a bridge for players to access classic utility cards in a standardized, white-bordered format.

The artwork for the Seventh Edition printing was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a gritty, dark aesthetic consistent with the visual evolution of the game at the turn of the millennium. Staples moved away from the more whimsical or caricature-heavy depictions of goblins found in early sets, opting instead for a more menacing and atmospheric portrayal of goblin drums echoing across a battlefield. The design remains a staple example of early red-aligned mechanics that emphasize forced combat and battlefield pressure.
