Provenance

Where it came from

Goblin War Drums first appeared in the Stronghold expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, designed as a thematic enchantment to reflect the chaotic and aggressive nature of goblin tribal decks. The card mechanics, which make creatures harder to block by requiring multiple defenders, were intended to simulate the overwhelming, disorganized swarm tactics characteristic of goblin lore within the game's multiverse.

The Seventh Edition version, released in 2002, features updated artwork by illustrator Peter Bollinger. Moving away from the more jagged and frantic aesthetic of earlier iterations, Bollinger’s depiction focuses on a more stylized, atmospheric representation of the drums. This printing was part of the transition into the modern frame design, marking the card’s place in a core set intended to provide a stable foundation for standard play at the time.
