Goblin War Strike

Goblin War Strike was released in 1998 as part of the Portal Second Age set, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to act as an accessible, entry-level experience for new Magic: The Gathering players. Released in the wake of the original Portal's success, the set sought to simplify complex game mechanics and provide a more intuitive introduction to the trading card game's fantasy universe through a simplified ruleset that excluded instant-speed interactions.

The card features an illustration by Pete Venters, a prolific artist known for his extensive contributions to the game's early visual identity. Venters was tasked with depicting the chaotic nature of goblin warfare, capturing the aggressive, horde-based aesthetic central to the red mana color pie. Upon release, the card became a notable staple for casual goblin-themed decks, though it was largely overshadowed by more powerful, complex cards available in contemporary expert-level expansions of that era.
