Where it came from
Goremand was introduced in the Commander Masters set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2023. This set was specifically designed to provide high-power reprints and support for the Commander format, a multiplayer variant of Magic: The Gathering that prioritizes social play and unique deck-building challenges. The card itself draws from the long-standing fantasy aesthetic of the game, depicting a monstrous, gluttonous entity that serves as a high-mana value creature, typical of black-aligned cards intended to punish or sustain the player through sacrifice mechanics.
The illustration for Goremand, created by artist Antonio José Manzanedo, captures the visceral, grotesque nature of the creature, emphasizing its formidable and consuming presence on the battlefield. Manzanedo, known for his detailed work within the Magic: The Gathering universe, opted for a composition that highlights the creature's immense scale and terrifying physical features. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, flavorful inclusion for black-themed decks, appreciated primarily by players seeking to round out their graveyard-focused strategies with impactful, large-bodied threats.
