Provenance

Where it came from

The Gorgon Flail was originally released in 2010 as part of the Magic: The Gathering core set Magic 2010. It was designed as an uncommon equipment card, intended to provide creature support by granting both a power boost and the deathtouch ability, a keyword that was becoming a recurring mechanical focus for black cards during this period of the game's development.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who sought to capture the thematic connection between the weapon and the petrifying gaze of a gorgon. Upon its release, it was well-regarded in limited formats for its efficiency, though it saw limited play in competitive constructed formats where more specialized equipment cards often took precedence.
