Where it came from
Gorilla Berserkers was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set followed the complex Ice Age storyline, focusing on the tactical warfare between the fractured nations of Terisiare. The card, illustrated by D. Alexander Gregory, features an aggressive ape warrior designed to emphasize the brute force and 'trample' mechanics that characterized green-aligned creatures during this era of the game's development.
The artwork reflects the gritty, high-fantasy aesthetic prevalent in mid-90s trading card design, prioritizing a visceral depiction of the subject to match its mechanical intensity. As part of a set known for its wide variety of uncommon and common cards designed to support diverse draft environments, the Gorilla Berserkers were received as a solid, functional addition to red-green aggro decks of the period, remaining a nostalgic piece of the game's mid-90s mechanical history.
