Gothmog, Morgul Lieutenant was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. This set marked a significant milestone for Wizards of the Coast as the first major crossover within the Universes Beyond line, aiming to integrate J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium into the mechanics and aesthetic of the long-running trading card game. The design focus for this set involved capturing the visceral nature of the Third Age, with Gothmog’s inclusion serving to represent the tactical leadership of Mordor during the Siege of Minas Tirith.

The card was illustrated by artist Ilker Yildiz, who sought to convey the character's grotesque and commanding presence as the lieutenant of the Witch-king of Angmar. Yildiz utilized a dark, atmospheric palette consistent with the visual depiction of the forces of Sauron established in the set's broader art direction.
