Grave Upheaval

Grave Upheaval was introduced in the Commander 2016 expansion, a set specifically designed to support the multiplayer Commander format by featuring four-color legendary creatures. Released in late 2016, this sorcery card was included as part of the Entropic Uprising preconstructed deck, which focused on the chaos-themed gameplay of the Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder commander. Its design reflects the set's emphasis on high-mana value plays and graveyard recursion, offering a flexible tool that allows players to return a creature from any graveyard to the battlefield while providing basic land cycling to smooth out mana bases.

The artwork was provided by Vincent Proce, an illustrator known for his dynamic and often visceral style within the Magic: The Gathering universe. Proce sought to visually capture the turbulent essence of the card’s effect, depicting a scene of earth-shattering resurrection that aligns with the chaotic nature of the Jund, Grixis, and Temur-adjacent color identity associated with the deck.
