Gravedigger

Gravedigger was originally introduced in the core sets of Magic: The Gathering to provide a reliable recursive mechanism for black-aligned decks. First appearing in the Tempest expansion in 1997, the card was reprinted in Magic 2011 with updated card frames and artwork by artist Greg Staples. The design intent behind Gravedigger has always been to offer a two-for-one value play, allowing players to recover a creature from their graveyard to their hand, which reinforces the thematic cycle of death and resurrection central to the game's necromantic color pie.

The 2011 iteration features Staples' grim, atmospheric illustration, which emphasizes the character's role as a weary scavenger of the battlefield. Upon its release in the M11 core set, the card was well-received as a staple of Limited play, where its ability to mitigate card disadvantage made it a frequent inclusion in draft environments.
