Gravespawn Sovereign

Gravespawn Sovereign was introduced as a rare card in the Onslaught expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2002. It was designed as a thematic centerpiece for Zombie tribal decks, allowing players to tap untapped Zombies they control to put target creature cards from any graveyard onto the battlefield under their control. Its inclusion in the 2022 Starter Commander Decks served as a thematic reprint, bringing the classic undead synergy to a new generation of players looking to build graveyard-focused strategies.

The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often defines the macabre and atmospheric aesthetic of the game's creature types. Staples intended to capture the visceral decay and the commanding, necromantic presence of the Sovereign. Upon its original release, it was well-regarded by casual players for its ability to turn an opponent's fallen threats into assets, becoming a staple inclusion in black-based tribal decks that prioritize board state manipulation over direct damage.
