Where it came from
Gremlin Infestation was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the steampunk-inspired plane of Kaladesh, the card reflects the chaotic role of Gremlins, which are depicted as invasive, energy-consuming pests that threaten the city’s reliance on magical Aether. The card design was intended to provide players with a red-aligned enchantment that punishes opponents for utilizing artifacts, mirroring the setting's narrative of industrial sabotage.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who captured the frenetic and destructive nature of the creatures in a dynamic, action-oriented style. Upon its debut, the card was received as a niche but effective tool for sideboards in competitive formats like Modern, where its ability to destroy artifacts provided a thematic and mechanical solution to artifact-heavy strategies. It remains a recognizable piece of the Kaladesh block's distinct aesthetic and mechanical focus on artifact interaction.
