Greven, Predator Captain

Greven, Predator Captain was released in 2019 as part of the Commander 2019 supplemental set for Magic: The Gathering. As a legendary creature, the card was designed to anchor the 'Merciless Rage' deck, a preconstructed product centered on the red-black color identity and the madness mechanic. The character represents Greven il-Vec, the cruel commander of the flying flagship Predator from the game's long-running Weatherlight Saga, serving as a primary antagonist during that era of the narrative.

The card was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who captured Greven’s imposing physical stature and his role as an enforcer of the Phyrexians. The design focuses on high-risk, high-reward gameplay, requiring players to balance the card's significant power against the cost of his own health. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the Commander community as a definitive and powerful representation of the character that successfully translated his established lore into a functional and aggressive tabletop strategy.
