What it does

Put a -1/-1 counter on target creature, then proliferate. (Choose any number of permanents and/or players, then give each another counter of each kind already there.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Grim Affliction was originally printed in the 2011 Scars of Mirrodin block, a setting defined by the conflict between the metallic inhabitants of Mirrodin and the encroaching corruption of the Phyrexians. The card was designed as a thematic representation of Phyrexian oil, a substance that slowly consumes and transforms living tissue, which is mechanically reflected through the use of -1/-1 counters and the proliferate keyword.

The Modern Masters 2015 version features the original illustration by James Zapata, whose work for the set leaned into the stark, industrial horror of the Phyrexian aesthetic. As a reprint set intended to bolster the Modern format's card pool, the 2015 edition maintained the card's role as a niche utility piece for decks utilizing counter-based synergies, receiving a measured reception from players who valued its dual functionality in limited draft environments.
