Grim Guardian

Grim Guardian was released in May 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx expansion, the third and final set in the Theros block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to bring the enchantment-focused themes of the block to their narrative conclusion, centered on the return of the god-villain Xenagos. Within the game mechanics, the card features the constellation keyword, which triggers an effect whenever an enchantment enters the battlefield under the player's control, perfectly aligning with the Greek mythology-inspired setting of the plane of Nyx.

The artwork for the card was created by fantasy illustrator Ryan Barger, who was tasked with depicting a nightmarish, ethereal sentinel suited to the underworld realm of the Underworld. Barger utilized the set's signature 'starfield' aesthetic, which gives creatures from Nyx a translucent, cosmic appearance. Upon its release, the card became a staple in limited formats and niche enchantment-synergy decks, valued by players for its ability to steadily drain opponents' life totals through its triggered ability as the board state evolved.
