Grimoire of the Dead

Grimoire of the Dead was introduced in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Innistrad. The set was designed with a gothic horror theme, drawing heavily from classic tropes of vampires, werewolves, and the undead. As a mythic rare artifact, the card was conceptualized to serve as a high-stakes centerpiece for graveyard-focused strategies, mechanically representing a forbidden tome that requires a significant investment of resources before unleashing a powerful reanimation effect.

The artwork was commissioned from Steven Belledin, who sought to capture a sense of ancient, decaying dread through his signature painterly style. By emphasizing heavy shadows and textural details on the book’s binding and spectral emanations, Belledin aimed to create a visual identity that felt distinct from the more polished, high-fantasy aesthetics typical of the game. Upon its release, the card was widely noted by players for its flavorful connection to the set's narrative and its unique, albeit difficult-to-execute, strategic utility.
