Where it came from
Grindclock was released in 2014 as part of the Magic 2015 core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as an artifact that functions as a slow, inevitable win condition, centered on the game's mill mechanic, which forces an opponent to discard cards from their library into their graveyard. The card reflects the set's focus on providing versatile, flavor-forward artifacts that could fit into a variety of casual and limited play environments.
The artwork for Grindclock was illustrated by Greg Staples. Staples, a veteran Magic artist, utilized a gothic, mechanical aesthetic to capture the essence of a time-based device that grinds away a player's resources. The piece was received as a quintessential example of Magic's artifact design, balancing functional utility with a clear, evocative visual narrative that explains exactly what the card does through its imagery.
