Where it came from

Gristleback was released in 2006 as part of the Guildpact expansion, the second set in the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set focused on three of the ten guilds in the Ravnica setting, with Gristleback representing the Gruul Clans, a faction defined by their primal, destructive nature and rejection of urban civilization. The card was designed to mechanically support the Bloodthirst ability, which rewarded players for dealing damage to an opponent earlier in the same turn.

The artwork was provided by Lars Grant-West, a veteran illustrator known for his realistic and biological approach to fantasy creature design.
