Grixis Illusionist was released in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering set Conspiracy, a release designed specifically for drafting and multiplayer formats. This set drew heavily on the lore of the plane of Fiora, a world defined by political intrigue and the shifting power structures of the capital city, Paliano. The card functions as a utility creature, allowing players to manipulate the battlefield by manipulating the colors of other permanents, a mechanic that echoes the chaotic and deceptive nature of the set's central political themes.

The artwork was commissioned from Mark Tedin, a veteran illustrator whose work has defined the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering since its earliest days in the 1990s. For this piece, Tedin leaned into his characteristic style of high-fantasy surrealism, depicting a cloaked figure channeling the complex, necrotic, and artificial energies associated with the Grixis shard of Alara.
