Grixis Sojourners

Grixis Sojourners was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set served as the third and final installment of the Shards of Alara block, a landmark design cycle that explored a multiverse fractured into five distinct worlds, each defined by a specific color philosophy. This card represents the plane of Grixis, a decaying, mana-starved landscape characterized by the colors blue, black, and red, where life is sustained only through the consumption of necromantic energy.

The card was illustrated by the artist Dave Allsop, who captured the grim aesthetic of the Grixis shard by depicting a wandering undead figure draped in tattered, ritualistic garb. The design team intended for the Sojourners to function as a bridge between the set's graveyard mechanics and its emphasis on multicolor synergies. Upon its release, it was regarded as a functional utility creature that epitomized the set's focus on the cyclical relationship between death and magical power within the Alara narrative.
