Where it came from
Guided Passage was originally printed in the Apocalypse expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2001, designed as part of a set centered around the conflict between the Phyrexians and the Coalition. The card serves as a unique political tool in Commander and multiplayer formats, forcing an opponent to reveal cards from the top of your library and choose one for you to keep. It reflects the mechanical experimentation of the Invasion block, which emphasized gold, multi-colored cards and complex graveyard or library interactions.
The 2022 Double Masters version features updated art by Volkan Baga, who brought a more refined, painterly aesthetic to the card compared to the original illustration. This reprint was included in the Double Masters 2022 set as a thematic inclusion for players who enjoy group-hug or political deck-building styles. The card was well-received by the casual community for its ability to generate high-variance, social game states, solidifying its place as a staple for players who prefer cooperative or chaotic gameplay mechanics.
