Gustcloak Savior was originally introduced in the Onslaught expansion in 2002, serving as a tactical piece within the white color identity that rewarded players for aggressive attacking. Designed to mitigate combat risks, the creature allows players to untap their attacking forces if they find themselves in an unfavorable position, reflecting the strategic emphasis on 'morph' and combat dynamics prevalent in the Onslaught block.

The version included in the 2014 Duel Decks: Elspeth vs. Kiora set features artwork by Jim Nelson. Nelson, a long-time contributor to Magic: The Gathering, utilized his characteristic style to depict the soldier in a heroic, poised stance. This specific printing was released to balance the deck's mechanics against the blue-green theme of Kiora, providing the Elspeth deck with a reliable defensive utility during the back-and-forth skirmishes that defined the Duel Decks series.
