Guttural Response

Guttural Response was released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Lorwyn during its transformation into the darker Shadowmoor, the expansion focused on color-hybrid mechanics and themes of survival and creeping gloom. This specific card was designed as a niche sideboard tool, providing green and red players with a rare ability to counter blue spells, a direct mechanical response to the dominance of blue control decks in the competitive landscape of the time.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, whose illustrative style captures the visceral and jagged aesthetic characteristic of the Shadowmoor set. Ejsing's depiction emphasizes the raw, primal nature of a red-green counter-spell, moving away from the more traditional, intellectual portrayal of countering found in blue cards. Upon its release, it was well-received by players seeking color-pie experimentation, quickly becoming a staple in competitive formats where non-blue interaction was highly valued for its tactical surprise.
