Where it came from
Halana and Alena, Partners was released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The card depicts two legendary monster hunters from the plane of Innistrad, characters established in earlier sets who serve as protectors of the human population. Their inclusion as a dual-creature card reflects the set's mechanical focus on 'partners' and synergistic character pairings within the gothic horror narrative.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive character work. Villeneuve intended to capture the bond between the two women during a moment of tactical coordination, balancing their roles as formidable fighters with the somber atmosphere of the Innistrad setting. The card was well-received by players for its flavor-accurate mechanics, which allow the characters to buff each other and distribute power to other creatures on the battlefield.
