Where it came from
Hammer of Ruin was released in 2010 as part of the Worldwake expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Zendikar, the expansion focused on the awakening of the Eldrazi, ancient and destructive entities trapped long ago. Mechanically, the card was designed to support an equipment-heavy playstyle, providing a boost to power and toughness while offering a unique utility: the ability to strip an opponent's equipment, reflecting the chaotic and destructive nature of the setting.
The artwork was created by illustrator Kev Walker, a long-standing contributor to the game known for his dark, visceral aesthetic. Walker’s depiction of the Hammer emphasizes a sense of brutal, weathered weight, aligning with the rugged, adventurous tone of the Zendikar block. Upon its release, the card found a niche role in limited formats and niche sideboard strategies, though it remains primarily recognized for its evocative thematic contribution to the lore of the Eldrazi conflict.
