Where it came from
Hammerhand was introduced in the Magic 2015 core set, released by Wizards of the Coast in July 2014. As a common red aura card, it was designed to support aggressive strategies in the Limited and Constructed environments of the era, providing a temporary speed boost and an offensive utility that prevents a single target creature from blocking. The card fits into a long-standing tradition of red-aligned combat tricks that emphasize haste and mobility at the expense of long-term board presence.
The artwork for Hammerhand was illustrated by Mathias Kollros, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. Kollros utilized a visceral, high-action style to capture the card's function, depicting a warrior surging forward with a magically enhanced strike. Upon release, it was well-received by draft players as a reliable, low-cost tool for pushing damage in fast-paced games, fitting seamlessly into the aggressive archetypes that defined the red color identity during the 2015 expansion cycle.
