Where it came from
The Handy Dandy Clone Machine was released in 2017 as part of Unstable, the third un-set in the Magic: The Gathering franchise. These sets are designed by Wizards of the Coast to explore experimental and humorous mechanics that fall outside the traditional rulebook of standard play. The set was developed under the direction of Mark Rosewater, who sought to push the boundaries of card interaction by focusing on silver-bordered cards that prioritize fun and novelty over tournament legality.
The card features illustration by artist Chuck Lukacs, who employed a whimsical, retro-futuristic aesthetic to capture the chaotic nature of the cloning concept. The design reflects the 'Unstable' theme of mad science, utilizing a permanent-style activation cost that allows players to create token copies of creatures. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by casual players and cube enthusiasts for its potential to create unpredictable game states and its distinct, playful visual identity.
