Where it came from
Hanna's Custody was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to represent a pivotal moment in the Weatherlight Saga, a long-running narrative arc that defined the game's lore for several years. The card functions as an enchantment that reflects the protective, defensive nature of the character Hanna, the ship's navigator, as she shields her companions from magical interference.
The artwork was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the game's most iconic early contributors. Rush sought to capture the character's focused, scholarly aesthetic while emphasizing the ethereal quality of the protection spell she is casting. The design was received as a niche utility card, valued by players for its ability to disrupt opponents' strategies during the game's formative years in the late nineties.
