Where it came from
Hard Cover was introduced in the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2019. Designed as an uncommon artifact, the card reflects the set's focus on refining foundational mechanics and providing utility across various deck archetypes, specifically within the blue color identity which emphasizes library manipulation and card advantage.
The artwork was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, whose aesthetic contributions to the game often feature clean, magical compositions. The card depicts a magically reinforced tome, aligning with the flavor of the set's artifacts and equipment. Upon its release, it was recognized by players as a functional piece of utility for limited formats, valued for its ability to protect key creatures while providing a modest power boost.
