What it does
Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt this turn by attacking creatures.
After encasing it in a paralyzing beam of light, the angel studied the Eldrazi as a child would study a bug, curiously and without fear.

Where it came from
Harmless Assault was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a white common spell intended for Limited formats, serving as a tactical defensive tool that prevents all combat damage dealt by attacking creatures during a turn. Its inclusion in the set reinforced the set's theme of epic, large-scale conflict, providing players with a necessary utility to survive the high-power creature interactions that defined the Eldrazi block.
The artwork, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures the essence of a serene but firm magical intervention. Staples focused on the visual contrast between the chaotic threat of an incoming charge and the calm, golden manifestation of the spell's protective barrier. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard, functional piece of removal-adjacent support that fit well within the mechanical requirements of the environment, valued by players for its ability to stabilize a board against aggressive strategies.
