Where it came from
Harsh Scrutiny was released in 2016 as part of the Kaladesh expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Kaladesh, a world defined by its bright aesthetic, magical inventions, and steampunk-inspired technology, the card was designed to reflect the political maneuvering and surveillance inherent in the set's narrative. Mechanically, it functions as a sorcery-speed hand disruption spell that allows players to peek at an opponent's hand and exile a creature, illustrating the theme of uncovering secrets within the city's complex society.
The card features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator known for her atmospheric and detailed character work within the game. Her illustration for Harsh Scrutiny focuses on a figure amidst the metallic, refined architecture of Kaladesh, capturing the tension of an investigative moment. Upon its release, the card was recognized for its utility in competitive formats like Standard, where it served as a tactical tool for controlling the game's early stages by thinning out potential threats before they could be played.
