What it does
Target player discards two cards. If you cast this spell during your main phase, that player discards four cards instead.
The hymn's melody has persisted since Tourach's time, but the words changed to invoke the phobias of each listener.

Where it came from
Haunting Hymn was originally released in the Mirage set in 1996, designed by Wizards of the Coast to introduce more complex graveyard interaction and discard mechanics to the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card serves as a representative example of the mid-90s era of card design, where flavor and mechanical complexity were prioritized to deepen the game's competitive landscape. It was included in the 2017 Iconic Masters set to provide players with access to older, niche cards while featuring updated card frames and a refined presentation.
The artwork for the original printing was illustrated by Roger Raupp, who captured the eerie, gothic aesthetic central to black-aligned magic cards during that period. His work on the piece focused on conveying a sense of spiritual dread and auditory discomfort through visual cues, aligning with the card's function of forcing opponents to discard cards at random. The card is regarded by collectors as a functional utility piece that evokes the nostalgic art style of the early Magic years.
