Where it came from
Heartfire was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion War of the Spark. The set focused on a climactic narrative arc involving a massive conflict between the gatewatch and the antagonist Nicol Bolas on the plane of Ravnica. The card was designed as a common-rarity sorcery intended to capture the flavor of the desperate sacrifices made by the citizens and planeswalkers caught in the middle of the war, mechanically allowing players to sacrifice a creature or planeswalker to deal direct damage.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a dramatic, high-contrast visual style to depict the fiery essence of the spell being unleashed. The artwork was crafted to resonate with the set's themes of explosive magical energy and impending destruction. Upon its release, Heartfire was recognized by players as a functional, aggressive utility card that complemented the set's focus on planeswalker synergy, fitting naturally into the limited draft environments of the era.
