Provenance

Where it came from

The Hedge Troll promo was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos set for Magic: The Gathering. This specific version features the iconic expansion symbol and a distinct star, marking it as a promotional card distributed through the DCI tournament program. It was designed to highlight the set's theme of alternate realities, where iconic creature types were re-imagined with different color identities, in this case transforming the traditional green troll into a green-white hybrid creature.

The artwork was illustrated by Dave Dorman, a celebrated fantasy and sci-fi artist known for his work on Star Wars. Dorman aimed to give the creature a rugged, grounded appearance that fit seamlessly into the fantasy aesthetic of the game. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency and unique mechanics, serving as a staple in various green-white decks of that era and remaining a sought-after piece for players who favor the distinct visual style of the Planar Chaos set.
