Where it came from
Hekma Sentinels was released in 2017 as part of the Amonkhet expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws heavy inspiration from Ancient Egyptian mythology, centering on the plane of Amonkhet, a desert world ruled by the god-pharaoh Nicol Bolas. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the set's focus on desert-themed mechanics and creature-based interactions, serving as a functional piece of the limited environment's infrastructure.
The card features artwork by Lake Hurwitz, who utilized a vivid, golden-hued palette to emphasize the divine and architectural aesthetic of the city of Naktamun. The illustration depicts the magical barrier—the Hekma—that protects the city's inhabitants from the dangers of the surrounding desert. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard utility creature, noted by players primarily for its interaction with cards that require desert-related synergy.
