Hellish Rebuke

Hellish Rebuke was originally printed as a rare sorcery in the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in 2021. The card represents a classic spell from Dungeons & Dragons, designed to punish attackers by dealing damage based on the severity of the blow received. Its inclusion in a Secret Lair drop—a series of limited-run, collectible cards featuring unique artistic treatments—allowed Wizards of the Coast to lean into the thematic roots of the D&D collaboration.

This specific variant, numbered 7171, was featured in the 'Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Smithy Superdrop.' The card was reimagined with stylized, immersive artwork that draws heavily from the aesthetic of early D&D manuals and dungeon-crawling lore. By emphasizing the high-fantasy nature of the spell, the illustrators sought to evoke a sense of nostalgic dread, a design choice that was generally well-received by players who appreciated the crossover of TTRPG flavor with the mechanical complexity of modern Magic cards.
