Herald of Torment

Herald of Torment was released in 2014 as part of the Born of the Gods set, the second expansion in the Theros block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore themes of Greek mythology and divine intervention, focusing heavily on the enchantment creature card type. The Herald serves as an embodiment of the set’s 'bestow' mechanic, which allows players to play a creature as an Aura enchantment to grant buffs to other units, reflecting the fickle and oppressive nature of the Theros underworld.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who sought to capture the ominous and ethereal essence of a nightmare. The design features a shadowed, skeletal figure enveloped by dark, swirling motifs, intended to visually represent the card’s ability to siphon life from the player while providing a significant tactical advantage. Upon release, it was well-received by the competitive community for its versatility as both an aggressive flying attacker and a powerful enchantment, cementing its place as a staple of the black-aligned decks of that era.
