Where it came from
Hero of the Winds was released in 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set returned to the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros, focusing on themes of the underworld and the interplay between mortals and gods. The card features the 'heroic' mechanic, a returning keyword from the original Theros block designed to reward players for targeting their own creatures with spells, reflecting the classic trope of a mortal gaining power through divine or heroic favor.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who has contributed extensive work to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Kollros utilized a dynamic, action-oriented style to capture the essence of a champion in the midst of battle, adhering to the set’s established visual language of high-fantasy Hellenistic motifs. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional inclusion for limited play formats, serving as a solid supporting piece for decks centered on aggressive creature strategies.
